One of the original founders of Adelaide Gastrointestinal Specialists (2010), Associate Professor William Tam received his medical qualifications in 1993 from the University of Adelaide. This was followed up in 2000, when he became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. During his education, he undertook a PhD thesis on reflux disease and Barrett's oesophagus which led to further training in both Amsterdam and Tokyo.
Professor Tam was also a Fellow of Gastroenterology at Middlesex Hospital in London, a position he obtained in 2003 and includes honorary lectureship at the University of London. It was during this period in London that Dr Tam honed his skills in therapeutic endoscopy, including ERCP and EUS.
He has held key posts at both the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the Lyell McEwin Hospital. Professor Tam is a state reference member for the Australian National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.
