A/Prof Kate Lynch

Dr Kate Lynch specialises in both gasteroenterology (oesophagus, stomach, small and large bowel) as well as hepatology (liver and pancreas). She practises both at Royal Adelaide Hospital, where she is the Head of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Service, as well as at Adelaide GI Specialists, with procedures performed at St Andrews Hospital.

Her original medical and specialty training was in Adelaide, before she spent 7 years in Oxford, UK, where she performed a clinical fellowship in inflammatory bowel disease, gastroenterology and hepatology, as well as undertaking both clinical and lab-based research. She returned to Adelaide at the start of 2019, after completing her Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford, entitled "Peripheral blood, Liver and Intestine-specific lymphocytes in Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease".

Dr. Lynch has a wide experience in a variety of gastroenterological and liver conditions and performs endoscopy and colonoscopy. She has authored many peer-reviewed publications and has spoken internationally on her research. Her special expertise lies in inflammatory bowel disease  and autoimmune liver diseases (such as primary sclerosing cholangitis, primary biliary cholangitis, and autoimmune hepatitis).

Her current research projects include understanding the role and potential use of IBD biologic agents in PSC; characterising the phenotype of IBD in PSC; manipulating the microbiome in PSC; evaluating the adolescent transition process in South Australia for patients with IBD and co-designing with patients a new ideal IBD transition service; as well as multiple pharmaceutical clinical trials for novel agents in IBD and PSC.

Dr Lynch is also involved with patient education and charities as a medical advisor to PSC Support UK and PSC Support Australia, and regularly undertakes patient educational events, with some lectures available online through YouTube.
